Conference Schedule | Featured Speakers | Lodging | Fishing | Transportation | Online Registration

Valdez, a small town in one of the most beautiful settings in the country, resides on the edge of Prince William Sound.  Glacial capped mountains drop into the deep waters of the Valdez Port and Arm.   Wildlife abounds: eagles, whales, puffins, sea lions and sea otters, are commonly seen in the surrounding area.

World class fishing, with Halibut in the 300 lb range, and  King salmon can be found in the port. Just over the pass, artic char and greyling can be found. The available Fishing charters are a great way to see the breathtaking Prince William Sound.

This year the 15th Last Frontier Theater Conference on June 22 - 29, 2007 (www.pwscc.edu/conference), dedicated to showcasing new playwrights we will be dovetailing with our conference. There will be famous actors, and directors critiquing plays and holding seminars.

Getting to Valdez is part of the adventure.     There are plane flights from Anchorage twice a day, weather permitting.  The plane flies over some of the most picturesque scenery anywhere with the Columbia glacier to the North and Prince William Sound to the South.

Alternatively, you can take the ferry from Whittier, which is accessible by the train Glacier Discovery(www.alaska.net/~sea/whittier.html) from Anchorage.  The ferry also passes by glaciers and wildlife (www.akmhs.com/schedules) .

You can also drive from Anchorage.   The Glenn and Richardson Highways wind past the Matanuska and Worthington glaciers, over Thompson Pass, then down through Keystone canyon,  a six hour trip.   This is one of the prettiest drives in all of North America.

Our Midnight Sun Fun Run will be up Mineral Creek to the Horsetail waterfall.   We will have Alaskan style music and a halibut and salmon fish fry.   There will be a Stan Stephens glacier tour on Friday afternoon.  You can sign up for this when you register online or we will send you an activities registration form. Our family has lived here for 14 years and we have never become tired of the surrounding scenery.    Please join us for the AKAFP Scientific congress.

Special Friday Afternoon Sea Kayak Trip for Registrants from Anadyr Adventures

If you would like to reserve a space on one of our trips simply contact our office between 9am to 5 pm (Alaska time) by calling 907.835.2814, tollfree at 1.800.TO.KAYAK (1.800.865.2925).
By e-mail at: anadyr@anadyradventures.com. Include the dates and trip of your interest, your phone number and the best time to call.

Here is the description to the Shoup Glacier trip. You can also find this on our  website: www.anadyradventures.com.  "Our most popular day trip to date Shoup Glacier, is unique to Prince William Sound because it has two tidal basins. Abundant with sea-life, marine birds, ducks, sea otters and harbor seals, Shoup Bay has the fastest growing Kittiwake rookery in Prince William Sound with more than 20,000 birds and 6,000 nests. Great for hiking, kayaking near icebergs, and observing harbor seals hauled out on ice floes, Shoup Bay is the ideal trip for beginner kayakers. An efficient and comfortable water taxi is used for round trip transport to kayak departure point (40 minute boat ride each way). Clients should pack a picnic for dinner. We also  provide snacks and hot drinks for everyone."

Shoup Glacier Day Trip

Meet at the office of Anadyr Adventures for a pre-trip safety briefing, and equipment fitting and a brief kayaking lesson. Load boats on our specialized ‘water taxi’ and sit back and enjoy. The trip out to Shoup takes about 1/2 hour and is the perfect opportunity to see ‘rafts’ or flotillas of sea otters and on occasion, the lone Humpback Whale.  Once we arrive in Shoup Bay we’ll unload the kayaks and begin our on-water adventure with a history of the area. We’ll soon make our way toward the inner tidal basin, which is unique to Prince William Sound. Depending on tides we will either paddle the boats up a tidal rivers to reach the basin, or line them in classic Alaskan explorer style. Once in the tidal lagoon, our guides will give a talk on the nature of glaciers and the resulting ice which "calves" from the face. Get a better understanding of the geology of the area as our trained guides will relate "the story of the rocks."
One of the main highlights of any Shoup Glacier trip is to visit the Black-Legged Kittiwake rookery. With numbers reaching 20,000, "the kittiwake rock" is an amazing sight. Learn all about this interesting gull species which has become an ‘indicator species’ for the overall health of the sound.  After paddling for several hours, enjoy your lunch and a refreshing hike up on the moraine (the deposits left behind by the retreating glacier) and get a bird’s eye view of the entire area. To finish off the trip enjoy a slow paddle back to our taxi waiting for us in the outside bay.
-No experience is necessary.
-$159/person (water-taxi and park entrance fee included)
-easy flat water paddling
-minimum age 6
-group size: 4-8
-total trip time 8 hrs
-actual time on the water 6 hours with frequent stops for wildlife and glacier watching, lunch and optional hikes.
