Message from the Conference Chair

Greetings from Juneau,

I cordially invite you and your family to the 23rd Annual Alaska Academy of Family Physicians Scientific Congress June 12-15, 2008.  Alaska’s capital, Juneau is a quick flight from Seattle and is an experience not to be missed.  Alaska’s third largest city is located at the base of towering mountains overlooking Gastineau channel with stunning views and a great mix of city life, culture and history as well as amazing outdoor activities and adventure.

Traveling to Juneau is easy with several flights daily from Seattle (2 hour flight) and Anchorage (90 minutes).  Most people know that you can’t drive to Juneau, but you can take the Alaska Marine Highway Ferry System with your vehicle from ports like Bellingham, WA, Prince Rupert, B.C, or Haines and Skagway, Alaska and this in itself is an excellent adventure as you make your way to the conference.  Multiple options are available for lodging including hotels close to the convention center, bed and breakfasts, RV parks and national forest camping sites at the Mendenhall Glacier.

The speakers making their way to Juneau by plane or ferry are excellent standouts both nationally and locally.  A wide variety of topics will be covered including writing about your medical experiences, public health issues, ICU care, complementary medicine and internal medicine topics just to name a few.  I believe there will be something to interest everyone on the agenda and our speakers are excited to meet you and your colleagues in Juneau for some learning and rejuvenation.  Please note our conference is one week earlier this year (second weekend of June).

Some of our great annual activities are being planned including a Salmon Bake overlooking an old mining creek in the heart of the city.  Friday afternoon’s schedule is open for optional trips for glacier/fjords or whale watching tours that will be made available for you as well as a bike and brew tour of the city.  The President’s dessert reception will be held at the top of the Mount Roberts Tramway with spectacular views of Southeast Alaska and great hiking opportunities.  The Midnight Sun Fun Run is being organized and will have some spectacular scenery.

There are so many activities in Juneau during the summer, I suggest coming early or staying a few extra days to do a hike out the road, plan a halibut or salmon charter, visit the Shrine of St. Therese, plan a kayaking tour or a helicopter ride to walk on the glacier. Visit www.traveljuneau.com to explore the possibilities.

My family and I look forward to meeting you in Juneau in June 2008.

Dr. Cate Buley
Juneau Conference Chair
